i found the various wedding sites mailing list management software particularly annoying considering its such a well understood problem and all they have to do is handle household versus individual lists and syncronizing with the on line accept/decline tool..
We put codes on the back of our mailers for each person and hooked it up to a fairly straightforward "database" on our site. At the time, Anitra did a lot more web programming than me, so she could give you more detail. It was functional and didn't allow people to randomly put stuff in if they came upon our site.
We ended up collating responses into a Google Spreadsheet. It is possible to create a form from one of those and embed it into a page or print out a URL onto your invites (shorten with a link shortener though).
"Starting point" is right. Because there are also save the dates, invitations, place cards, thank-you notes, and a MILLION OTHER THINGS that have to be designed to match.
