Down the rabbit hole

I did it.

I joined fanfiction.net.

I told [livejournal.com profile] elenuial I was doing it, and though he teased me about writing fanfiction, he commended me for being totally unapologetic about it. And, naturally, reminded me that he had suggested I try my hand at it years ago.

I found an awesome beta who was happy to give my story the once-over, and I posted it after a few rounds of revision and creating a blurb.

Me at 5:00: OHMIGOD I JUST POSTED SOMETHING I WROTE ON THE SITE OMG OMG I FINISHED SOMETHING WHAT IF NO ONE LIKES IT WHAT IF NO ONE READS IT I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO WRITE ON MY BIO

And then I went to buy ingredients for dinner. I came back to my browser to check the recipe I was trying, and saw a notification in my FFnet filter.

Me at 5:15: OHMIGOD SOMEONE ALREADY READ MY STORY AND REALLY LIKED IT AND LEFT AN AWESOME REVIEW AND ADDED IT TO THEIR FAVORITES :D :D

I was, and still am, fully aware that this is what people do on that site. But 15 minutes? And added to her short list of favorites? I hummed to myself as I cooked, bouncing through dinner, and PMing my beta reader to share my excitement. She said I was super cute and I could pretty much hear her laughing at me through the text. Or it could've been [livejournal.com profile] elenuial actually laughing at me from my left. But I didn't care. Because it kept coming.

Me at 7:00: SOMEONE ELSE ADDED IT TO FAVORITES AND TWO PEOPLE SUBSCRIBED TO ME BASED ON ONE STORY AND THAT MEANS PEOPLE ACTUALLY WANT TO READ WHAT I WRITE SHOULD I LEARN TO WRITE SMUT NOW THIS IS SO COOL :D :D

I didn't think anyone would actually read anything I posted. I thought it would be like LJ, where friends who shared the fandom would go to hang out. The idea of a total stranger who is not obligated to be nice to me actually taking the time to read my story?

Pretty fucking great.

Something really small and dumb to be excited over, but this is new and fun and really silly. And I'm sure the novelty will wear off eventually.

But for now?

Me five minutes ago: ANOTHER REVIEW AND SHE REALLY REALLY LIKED IT

[livejournal.com profile] elenuial: Huge. Dork.

Me: :D

Go you!

Got linkage? No promises, I feel a strange gut obligation to mock fanfiction wherever possible, including the stuff in my own drafts folder. But now I'm curious.

[identity profile] hazliya.livejournal.com 2011-10-18 12:39 pm (UTC)(link)
If someone is going to mock me on the internet, I'd prefer it be someone I love.

This (http://www.fanfiction.net/~tinyfierce) is me. Still pretty bare.

[identity profile] laura47.livejournal.com 2011-10-18 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
omg i just got it to load (wouldn't load on my phone earlier). Dragon Age! That is actually what I am most likely to write in as well. :-) Are you on tumblr? [livejournal.com profile] autumnesquirrel is super into Dragon Age fandom on tumblr, if you want to investigate that. :-)

Oh, I need a DA icon!

[identity profile] laura47.livejournal.com 2011-10-18 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
yay DA2 humor! I've been wanting good humor that wasn't also super porny. I am laughing out loud. :-)

[identity profile] bright-ephemera.livejournal.com 2011-10-18 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
See...Rory, if I have to sign up to leave positive feedback, that's not really the same as joining a fanfic site, as such, right? Totally different. Stop laughing at me.

Congratulations! It's a pretty good feeling when people respond to your work.

Though not so much anymore, I used to be pretty big into reading fanfic. Wrote a handful of things myself. This is me: http://www.fanfiction.net/u/108150/

So, I'm sitting at work, reading your fanfic, and trying so hard not to giggle. It's awesome. I love it.

Now, I am kind of almost tempted maybe to really dip my toes into the fanfiction pool.

Maybe after NaNoWriMo. . .

[identity profile] hazliya.livejournal.com 2011-10-18 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you're enjoying it!

But writing these things will EAT YOUR SOUL. It's like "I have an idea for a short one!" and soon you have FOUR UNFINISHED ONES SITTING ON YOUR DESKTOP.

Unless you wanted to mod your NaNoWriMo goals into "40k of stories," which could totally work.

[identity profile] artful-username.livejournal.com 2011-10-18 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a NaNoWriMo idea already in place that is itching to be written. If you're right about the addiction part, December will be a better month to start. No crunch time at work and fewer things to take up my time.

The fact that I am now scheduling fanfic writing is vaguely disturbing, but I'll roll with it.

Yay fanfic!

I super super.reccomend doing [livejournal.com profile] yuletide to both of you, it is like the best thing in fandom in my opinion. :) it is a fanfic exchange that is only for rare or obscure fandoms! Everyone gets assigned someone to write for.anonymously, and they all go live on christmas and then names get revealed on new years. It is SO AWESOME. Check out what I've gotten, it includes.hamlet slash and harvard/mit slash http://archiveofourown.org/users/laura47/gifts

Also archive of our own is the.beeeeest and you should crosspost everything there :)

I once had this terrible (brilliant!) idea after many hours by myself in a car on the way to Dragon*Con one year based off of 1776. North Carolina/South Carolina slashfic: "North Carolina respectfully yields to South Carolina." I don't think I'll ever write that, but it made me giggle at the time and your Harvard/MIT slash comment reminded me of that. I wonder if someone would ever write that fic. Just because.

[identity profile] laura47.livejournal.com 2011-10-18 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Anthropomorphic state fic is a totally valid fandom. You should nominate that!

*sputter with laughter*

Excellent idea!

[identity profile] hazliya.livejournal.com 2011-10-18 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a popular artist on DeviantArt who does that with countries! =)

[identity profile] in-water-writ.livejournal.com 2011-10-18 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of adore that you wrote FEMINISTHULK fanfic. It's so cute.

[identity profile] laura47.livejournal.com 2011-10-18 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a whole lot of fun to write. I even went to San Francisco and wrote it in places that FH visited. I swear it was research and not a plan I'd already had in place!

I just got my festivids (yuletide for vids) assignment like 5 minutes ago and am overflowing with excitement and fear. I swear, these exchanges are SO AWESOME

[identity profile] hazliya.livejournal.com 2011-11-14 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't really poked around that site - what makes it different from ffnet?

[identity profile] hazliya.livejournal.com 2011-10-19 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
By the way, you wouldn't happen to have time to beta in the meanwhile, would you? =D

(if not, totally okay.)

[identity profile] artful-username.livejournal.com 2011-10-19 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Why yes, I do actually have time to beta for you and would be pleased to do so. :D

[identity profile] hazliya.livejournal.com 2011-10-19 12:39 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY =D

What email would you prefer I use? And can you use open office files?

[identity profile] artful-username.livejournal.com 2011-10-19 12:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Go ahead and use tegan . hendrickson @ gmail . com (without all of the spaces). I can use open office files.

Squee!

Excited!
