Intercon wrap!
Mar. 3rd, 2008 05:39 pmHere's the detailed breakdown of games, as promised.
Mystery at the Fairy Tale Reservation -
shogunhb said that he was looking forward to my interactions with Al El-Din, and for a good reason. It was fate.
I say it was fate because when I was bringing the bags up to the room, a bunch of them toppled and a blonde 17-year-old offered to help me carry them. I thanked him and after he left, I got changed into my Svetlana the Fair costume, which was gorgeous. It was yards of soft red satin, filligree jewelry, red ribbons, and glittery shoes. I left my hair down and threw on some makeup, adjusted my cleavage and skirt slit, then put on a bellydancing hip chain and flame-gradient scarf and headed out. I got a lot of compliments on the way (including
shadowravyn telling me that I actually wore orange well) and got to the game. Lo and behold, the one playing Al El-Din is the helpful blonde from earlier!
I really had fun interacting with the characters. Dani was my younger (sweeter, purer) sister, Owen was my overbearing father,
doompuppy was Koschei the Deathless, and there were characters like Ivan the Fool and Baba Yaga. I liked the game mechanic of Impossible Tasks, but less so the favor system. That was mostly a character thing, though, since the favor system got me married off to a horse. =/
That being said, I was snatched away later by Al El-Din (I kept wanting to call him aladdin!), and my father gave consent since his dislike for male suitors was overcome by his desire to not have a daughter married to a horse. But there were a lot of great in-game moments, and I really enjoyed it. A few choice quotes:
---
Svetlana: (from across the room) "Daddy! I'm going into the dangerous enchanted forest now, kay bye!" (goes into the forest)
Owen: (Barreling across the room) "Oh no you don't!"
---
Prince Fyodor: "By the way, when I kiss you, you remember something." (hands her a secret)
Svetlana: (reads it) "Son of a bitch!"
---
Svetlana: Oh, so that's why the ring didn't work for me.
Al El-Din: YOU stole my ring?!
Svetlana: What? You lie, I lie.
.
Ghost Fu, The Jade Emperor's Celestial Tournament: I played Copper Frog Xu, a tea server who was stabbed in the kitchens (along with her lover) before they got married and so thus had no burial place. I had a lot of fun interacting with
redfishie and
elenuial, as well as doing remarkably well in the tournament despite having little training. I whooped ass after some training from people like
gower, but my fierce loyalty to my teachers got me involved in heaps of trouble at times. I also had a lot of fun questing, like grooming the Kirin and calling down the moon goddess, so I was essentially the dark horse of the tournament and afterlife. =) I wore a bunch of hair ornaments with some blue satin robes and sashes, and was generally far more capable than I'd originally thought. The fights were hysterical to watch and roleplay, and the fighting mechanics were (for the most part) entertaining. The trouble was, after a certain point in the tournament, there were contestants who (by comparing numbers on your "power level" sheet) could dismiss you without even having to fight. So you didn't even get a chance. That was frustrating, because it pretty much rigged the tournament to end up between four or five people. But otherwise, pretty fun.
.
An Un-Conventional Odyssey: I got suited up for this in goth-tastic clothing just in time to meet Randy Milholland of Something Positive, who was an awesome guy to chat with. I'll scan the sketch he whipped up for me later. I was reunited with Dani in this one, and was harassed by
laurion a good deal. Between the incessant calls that were entertaining parodies of the VtM players and the random horde encounters, hickville turned out to be an interesting place to be. Every character had sex at some point during the game (one of them with a character from my New Voices play!) and we were all saved in the end by Foof the alien, who only asked for Canadian pennies as payment. Myself and the girl with the silver "boing" curls covered his face in black lipstick kisses, and the carload of girls clung to him for the group picture I posted last time.
.
Oh God, Everybody's Dying!:
elenuial and I finished writing this game the day before. All of our angels seemed really happy with their casting (especially
shadowravyn and
zapf), but the horde-style play didn't allow for them to explore inter-angel plots very much, but they got to have a rollicking good time with the incoming souls anyway. We got up to the 6th coming of Christ, had a battle royale, let two characters wander the void, and had some secrets exposed with the Bucket of Truth. I won't go into too much detail about the characters (horde or angel), seeing as there was interest to have us run it again, possibly at WPI. But it was an awesome game, and we enjoyed watching it as much as they enjoyed playing it.
.
Sassy Pirate Wenches on the Island of Stern Viking Jarls: What can I say about this game, really? I'm not gonna lie, it was the one I was really looking forward to, but there's just so much to it. I was especially excited about the character, depressing as her history was. To give you an idea of just how bad things were for her,
gower actually thanked me after the game for playing Culotta. I was confused for a moment before remembering her backstory, but knew I enjoyed playing her all the same.
The first thing I noticed before the game was the instant camaraderie between the pirate girls (all of our costumes were awesome; see group shots for more), and the second was the actual gamespace. The only lighting was a hanging of four blue-gel stage lights and some prop campfires, and the room was littered with snow-covered trees, wooden chairs with furs draped across the middle, and tents erected and decorated as meeting halls. My character, Culotta Milanese, took to the bottle half an hour into the 4-hour game in order to deal with the island, and spent almost the complete rest of the game appropriately inebriated. This influenced a good deal of my interactions with Frydrych, who quickly revealed himself to be an important past love, and I really enjoyed our dynamic of his chasing me and my finding ways to be angry. At one point, it came down to a makeout fight, which made a lot of people watching laugh quite hard.
Frydrych: "I pull you into my arms, dip you back, and kiss you."
Culotta: "Ohhh, we're going to need a GM for this."
Frydrych: "Why?"
Culotta: "I'm angry! Did you think I'd just let you?"
Kreg: (trots over) "What do you need?"
Culotta: "We're having a makeout fight."
Kreg: "A makeout fight?"
Culotta: "He wants to make out. I want to fight."
So we rock-paper-scissored for whether or not I got to struggle away, and I lost flat out. Then I tried to pull away and stomp off, but lost to Kreg and he informed me that "Instead, it all just looks cute."
Culotta was not a happy pirate, needless to say. But I got a lot of my major plots resolved in some amazing ways, especially with the pirate I had a lot of history with and turned out to be a lot more problematic than I'd thought, and spent a lot of time with Balthasar, the ship's love slave. The one playing him (I'm not sure of his name) hammed it up perfectly with the debonair attitude, pampering the girls, and just being suave in general (the accent didn't hurt! =D). But the interactions with countless others were pretty darn entertaining, and I loved the hell out of portraying a pirate who was equal parts tipsy, confused, angsty, and confident. The game definitely needed to be longer - there were so many things I wanted to do and not nearly enough time to do them in.
After the game ended, as people were scattered around, someone asked me why I didn't just give in to and marry Frydrych, whom I'd obviously loved in the past and could offer me a close-to-perfect future. I said that I'd had to keep turning him down (albeit hesitantly) because after he'd disappeared, Culotta had fallen in love with someone else (who had also disappeared, but she wasn't ready to give up on). After I said that, someone I'd spoken to in the game only once tapped me on the shoulder and asked in a hopeful voice: "So you really didn't marry him?"
"No, why?"
He smiled, pointed to his name badge, and said: "It's me. I'm Gray Jack."
I nearly had a heart attack. He'd been disguised and watching me the whole time, unable to say or do anything as I was chased by someone else because several people would have killed him if he revealed himself. He said he was relieved, though, that I hadn't married Frydrych, since now he and Culotta had a chance.
While I was rather impressed with the drama and heartbreak the GMs had created with that part of the plot, another part of me wanted to throttle
jingsaw and
gower (I think I did lightly smack the latter at some point for it) for writing it so that Culotta was angsty and aching for nothing. From a player standpoint, it was awesomely well-played. From a character standpoint, it was a moment of hair-pulling.
However, the game was hugely enjoyable, and I was sad when it ended.
Etc: Right after Pirates was the dance party, which was quite fun, and I was up until about 5am dancing and hanging out with people in the con suite, including Amos (Al El-Din), dani, and
shadowravyn. The last of these declared that it had been her birthday for a few hours, and she wanted lap dances. So, over the course of a few hours, Nuance was graced with a fair amount of lap dancing. We also garnered some interest in the Geek Girl Pinup Calendar, which I should share with the
interconlarp. Nuance, want to make an LJ group for those interested in the calendar?
Sunday I kept clear for packing, which was good because of the busy busy involved with checking out. But I got to have a slow, lazy brunch, and hang out some with
jingsaw to chat about gaming and such. He's someone I got at least marginally closer to over the course of the weekend, something that I'm always glad for.
elenuial and I nearly fell asleep during closing ceremonies, though we did get little jolts every time
doompuppy won a raffle. =) We managed to stay awake for the ride home, do some eating and Wii, and then sleep without setting the alarm. A good weekend indeed.
I ended up bonded to my Pirates character, Culotta, more than I expected. She might turn out to be one of my writer's block subjects - the things I write about when I can't think of what else to write about - and throw those bits into my "random crap" folder. Unless
gower and
jingsaw would want to see the results, they'll never see the light of day. =) Those, and the future pictures of me in my Culotta gear. One of the photographers I work with expressed an interest in doing a small shoot of me in full costume, so that sounds like a fun time. If that happens, would anyone like to see them?
I can't wait for Intercon I -
elenuial and I are already planning to pitch a game. And for those of you who love the ridiculous, keep a weather eye on the game list.
That should be it for the wrap up. In short, I love you all.

Date: 2008-03-04 03:59 am (UTC)What I think I'm going to argue for for the next run is that combat numbers only break ties, if they're even present at all -- as a tiebreaker, they're probably harmless except for doing their original purpose, but as an override they don't fit nearly as well. (and that allows for a character with a lot of strength (combat number) but no skill (bad cards) or one with a lot of skill (really good cards) but lousy strength.

Date: 2008-03-04 05:37 am (UTC)I agree with you (and mnemex) that the combat numbers' ability to just block the fight was a problem. We've been discussing changes to the combat system - both the version 1.1 (the current system somewhat streamlined) and the version 2.0 (trying to keep the same flavor with a significantly lighter system.)
I was surprised at how hard and fast the training mechanic got used. Not unhappy - just surprised. I was expecting the tournament winner to get knocked out of the tournament before he got up to speed.

Date: 2008-03-04 05:24 pm (UTC)Of the Favor system: getting tricked into marrying a horse (who was actually a prince in disguise) instead of your true love is a time-honored fairy tale trope. The system worked the way it was supposed to..even if it did leave you married to a horse for a little while.
But then you married El Al'Din, and found out all of his nifty secrets, so it all worked out in the end, right?
