So, [livejournal.com profile] elenuial was getting a "no sim card installed" message on his iPhone. We went on a rampage to find his 2-year warranty last night, and after I found it, we realized that the 800 number was no longer staffed after that time. So we waited until today, when I called the line for him from my phone and went through the automated menu and was connected to someone in like, two minutes. And at 1:15 in the afternoon, no less. He introduced himself as Tom, asked my name, and support went as follows:

T: So, what seems to be the problem?
H: We're getting a "no sim card installed" message and it won't connect to anything.
T: Have you tried ejecting the sim card and popping it back in?
H: I have no idea how to do that.
T: (laughing) All right, go find a paper clip.
H: ...Seriously?
T: Seriously. There should be a pinhole on the end of the phone.
H: Got it. And the drive it's connected to will pop out?
T: It should.
H: Holy crap, it worked!
T: (laughing) Now just put it back in.
H: Okay. (it reloads) Hey, sweetie, is this what it's supposed to look like?
E: Yep!
H: Great! Looks like it's fixed!
T: Don't you love easy fixes?
H: I can't believe I fixed an iPhone with a paperclip.
T: Miracle of technology.
H: Do I need to do anything else, like give you the warranty number or anything?
T: Nope, just have a great rest of your day.
H: Aw, thanks! You too. You're awesome!
T: You're awesome, too!

I asked if there was a supervisor or anything I could compliment him to, and he thanked me but said there wasn't really anyone. iPhone fixed in less than five minutes via very friendly and efficient tech support: Win!

So, my dad's trying to get his mp3s off of his old hard drive by putting it in the new tower, alongside the brand-new one. The computer accesses the hard drive just fine, and has no trouble opening everything but the mp3s. When he tries to play/copy/anything, he gets this message:

If it helps, he's running Windows 7 now.

Anyone know how to bypass this?

(and thanks for all the birthday wishes so far! =D)

New LJ theme!

Still fussing around with how to get rid of/change those freaking subject line images, but my old layout was wiped and I've been meaning to whip up a new one.

I usually don't like green, but I think that this one's growing on me. =)

I'd been having issues with my external hard drive, but now I think that they've all come together at once. I just installed Windows Service Pack 3, and now it refuses to acknowledge my external hard drive's existence. Plus, now Windows lags like crazy.

Yes, it recognizes that there is a drive there. I can remove it with the "remove hardware safely" window. When it pops up, Windows makes the "hey, there's a drive" noise but nothing else happens.
I've tried unplugging and replugging in every order I can think of. I've rebooted. Nothing.

I also tried to read it in Ubuntu, which has worked before, but Ubuntu said that the drive is unmountable because the drive is apparently still trying to talk to windows. Constantly.

I have no idea what to do. There's so much on this hard drive that I want to keep, but apparently can't get to at all.

This is really, really frustrating.

Is it possible to rip the hard drive part out of an external like that and read it somehow else, or does it actually have to be functioning to be readable?

I'm on the verge of tears. I moved my files onto the external so that this would not happen. Now, nowhere is safe to keep anything important, and that's unacceptable.

So, someone suggested I try AVG to get rid of my google problem.

I download it.

I scan.

MY LAPTOP BREAKS.

Seriously. As soon as I click to finish the scan, my system crashes and no longer fully boots. I can get into the advanced options menu fine, but as soon as it gets to the point where it'd ask me to choose a user, it just starts all over again. I can't even boot safe mode.

I'm so pissed off right now. This is ridiculous. Anti-fucking-malware did more damage than that stupid bug.

I don't know what to do. I'm clueless when it comes to booting. If anyone can help, please give me a call/email. I'm on [livejournal.com profile] elenuial's computer for now, and I'm free until about 5 tonight.

There are baked goods in it for anyone who can make my laptop function again. Even if it's just to get my files off of it.

So, I'm having this issue when I use google to search and click on a link. The link will then take me to an unrelated spam-filled random search engine designed to wreck my system.

Malwarebytes' scan turns up nothing. Can anyone help?

I've had photoshop for over a year now.

Today, it decides to tell me that my 30-day trial period has expired.

What.

WHAT.

I have my serial number and the activation number, but it refuses to work.

I'm about to cut a bitch.

I will keep my site plain and simple.
I will keep my site plain and simple.
I will keep my site plain and simple.

All the energy I have to redirect from panicking over Bowie is plentiful enough (not surprising) that I'm actually doing something with that domain I have. I have lots of crazy things I want to do with it. But I've always admired the simple, sleeker portfolio websites to the flashy and less comprehendable ones. Something about not needing to see how huge your photoshop dick is by being flooded with crazy overdesigned images everywhere.

So I will keep it as bare-bones, yet still me, as possible.

That's the result of about a few hours of working. I'd forgotten how horribly tedious this whole process is.

Does anyone know how to clean the conductor on a laptop keyboard?

It seems that everything's fine except for a few wonky keys. My guess is it's the conductor.

Is there any way to salvage a laptop once it's gotten wet?

So, my EEE runs Linux. I am happy about this, and learning linux slowly.

My problem is printing. Adam has an HP laser p1006, and while it's clearly detected, it will not print. It says that there's a driver, but my printer isn't on the supported list. So what do I do?

And, should that not work, does anyone have a printer I can use on Thursday? I'll supply my own paper, and possibly baked goods in thanks later on!

1. I hate iTunes. It's user-UNfriendly, and won't let me mess with my iPod the way I want to. I actually have to install every single new update for it to even show me my iPod onscreen. It's obnoxious.
Thus, I found Songbird, something simple and straightforward that lets me play my iPod's music, as well as directly gives me manual control. Hawt.

2. I need a petticoat for Halloween. Full-length, as in disney dress length. Ankles. Does anyone know where to get one cheap or know someone who could lend one to me? Only until Halloween is over. I just don't feel like making one.
