It's her first birthday today. She got a new toy, a giant chew, and scrambled eggs in her kibble this morning.

I'll be sending pictures to her breeder to show "Hey, she's still alive!" and might give her something extra at dinner.

Otherwise, business as usual for my spoiled age-now-measured-in-years brat. =)

GOING TO JAPAN BRB

(seriously, we find out in ~3wks specifically where.)
hazliya: (Default)
High points of my day:
- No customers at work today, meaning I spent the morning playing with the world's prettiest Bettas and a 4-pack of 8-week-old kittens in our adoption center.
- Finally, the store got in the cat toys I wanted to buy for Elsa that've been out of stock for over a month: tiny tennis balls with rolly bells in them.
- Left work early to get to auto repair for signal bulb and front tire. This is awesome in a few ways: the dog who patrolled the lobby jumped on the couch to be in my lap, I got some ATC billing done, the valve was leaking and not the tire, and all three (!! Stupid oil change place!) bulbs that were out they had in stock. Total time spent at garage: 1.5hrs. Total charge: $42. Awesome people, awesome place, happy car.
- Since I was super early, had time to dart by the store to get a high-sided litterbox (so that Elsa can't pee half-in, half-out anymore) and found two other things I'd been meaning to pick up for weeks, one of which I wasn't sure existed.
- I'm in love.
- Still early! No rush hour traffic!
- Found a parking spot on the street!
-Came home to Josh's band rehearsing in the living room. Coherent for a while, until one person played the can-can on the accordion, the violinist started playing something totally unrelated on his own, and Josh was so horrified that he started playing something ALSO completely random. Frustrated by the three random songs and everyone laughing so hard, Elsa started singing/bark-howling along so that there was so much noise in our living room I broke.
- The tiny hairclips I wasn't sure existed do exist, and I bought them on the aforementioned trip. Tiny enough to stitch bows onto and put in Elsa's fur. Tiny blue bow-flowers with rhinestones in the center. Adorable.
- Inspiration! struck while grocery shopping, leading to what could possibly be the best dinner ever in an hour or so. I feel more confident experimenting with food when the rest of the day has been a success.

That's what I remember for now, but I'm hoping to see [livejournal.com profile] elenuial happy when he comes home and make out with him.

The end.
hazliya: (red umbrella)

Today started off as a trip to Colt State Park, which contained a few dealbreakers.
1. No alcohol whatsoever.
2. 3-hour limit on weddings. (People were complaining that the park wasn't available enough for booking. Ironic.)

With some resignation, [livejournal.com profile] elenuial and I checked out some of the sights along the shoreline, had lunch, looked at a beautiful library building, and headed to my parents' house to say hello. They weren't home, but as he and I ate our takeout, we came up with a few other ideas that were quickly shot down. Arnold Arboretum has a 40-person max for group bookings. Barrington City Hall doesn't do tents. Other places that were meaningful to either of us all had similar giant drawbacks. It was frustrating.

Then he suggested the Zoo as a half-joke, and I mentioned that I'd spent half of my life at Roger Williams' Park. It was on our way home (literally, right next to the 95N ramp), so we drove around in it a bit and I pointed out the Temple of Music and the gazebo, both of which are very popular wedding spots. Then we parked and wandered over to the carousel, where I casually asked who to talk to about booking things. I was introduced to a couple of very obliging and nice men, one of whom happened to be the owner.

See, I was thinking that I could set up tents on one of the fields and get a bunch of carousel passes for the guests. But the owner, Roy, was so open to everything that he took [livejournal.com profile] elenuial and I for a walk around the premises, talking about how it was rare for weddings to be there, and how they only got maybe one or two a year. I told him how much the carousel meant to me and my childhood, and he was very pleased to hear that his vintage go-round was appreciated by someone who was now an adult.

Some amazing things about the site:
- He's willing to walk me through getting a liquor license, which I can get because the carousel is private property!!
- The bathrooms are in the carousel buildings. Park bathrooms INDOORS and right next to the site.
- Right next to the boathouse and japanese gardens. Literally.
- Carousel rides for the guests!
- Concrete ground, where he'll let me set up a series of tents in this awesome hexagonal curve around the building. Not grass/mud = good for guests, tables, and dance floor. When I told him my idea, he just scratched his head and said "Well, no one's done that before, but sure. You can do whatever you want."
- There'll be a fresh coat of paint on the building next year.
- Total electrical access!
- Awesome and obliging owner who takes total pride in his work and wants me to have a fabulous wedding in his carousel.
- It fits the aesthetic perfectly.

There are more. Many more.

Basically, he's told me I can do whatever I want to the space, and he'll keep the normal event price (about the same as a birthday party). Also, he's blocking off the two dates we want and won't book anything there until he hears from us, that's how important it is for him to have the place for someone who loves his baby as much as he does. This is... absolutely unheard of. I almost cried a little in the car.

I was stressed and panicky when I researched the other venues. And trying to think of ways to make them work. Instead, this one just flooded me with good news and I felt so relaxed looking around the space. I think that it was that "aha" moment so many people talk about, where you just know. And Roy said he'd even call the Providence Journal to see if they wanted to cover something like this.

I'm really, really excited. Getting married at the carousel. In a place I grew up. Going to chat with people about it tomorrow, and hopefully call Roy on Monday.

Emotional significance aside, how awesome would it be to get married in a carousel?

Fingers crossed.

So, lots of win to report:

- Was able to give living room and bedroom mini-makeovers for less than $100 each, and they look awesome. Still lots of cleaning to do, but yay! I'm hoping that uDon will see the look I'm going for and approve of paint chips.

- Dog is a-go! uDon has agreed to write him into the lease (along with a refundable pet deposit), and pick-up date is set for the middle of July. The female (a very sweet tricolor) is due in May, and the dad is a black-and-white, so the B+W color is a totally reasonable expectation. I wouldn't mind a tricolor, either. The female is a phalene, though, but her last litter were all papillons. AND it'll be less expensive, since he's a male, and it's my first choice breeder.

- The second floor is moving out, and we're splitting the two floors between the four tenants already here and two new ones, just like we'd hoped. We're planning to treat it like one big apartment.

- After Fox (no, seriously, Fox called our ISP) issued a cease-and-desist on someone in our building, uDon checked our IPs and, since it was no one in our apartment, could restore our internets. Yay! And now we know that the reason the internet's been crap for a while was because someone was a torrent hub storing copyrighted material of epic proportions. I look forward to it improving.

- Possible new job! Vet practice is very interested in me since I can be both tech and receptionist (two part-time positions right now that add up to full time and I can replace any full-timers that will be leaving) as well as a new business venture of theirs for me to help spearhead. They want my resume, and are coordinating an interview. ZOMG. I had to call [livejournal.com profile] elenuial, who was in the middle of something, to tell him. I really, really hope this works out well.

- Calcifer hasn't skipped a meal in over two months! And he's eating faster and faster every week. Howl is still fat. =(

- PAX East this weekend, staying with our lovely host instead of at the crazy hotel. Excited again!

There was more, but right now, this is all I can think of. I will reward myself for hours and hours of hard work by playing Sims 3 a bit and eating mint milanos.

And finally, dogs are awesome. Case and point: a husky calming a fussy baby by singing. Not howling, singing like he would to the pups. Apparently, it works on baby humans, too. (You only need to watch until about a minute in.)

I love Job Lot and the Christmas Tree shops.

In an effort to redecorate (Uncle Don is letting me paint!), I went out for some home decor things, like bath rugs and curtains and whatnot. I also wanted to get some things to make my house more gaming and crash space friendly. Also, [livejournal.com profile] elenuial's brother is likely moving in with us this summer. And springtime = spring cleaning. Therefore, the apartment is getting a makeover.

18x 24 canvas: $5
Sheer curtains: $5
Giant dog beds that make awesome floor cushions: $12
Big, fluffy pair of guest pillows: $10/pair

The list goes on and on. It's so awesome - I didn't know there was a Job Lot nearby! - but I'm a huge fan of cheap furnishings.

And I found this absolutely beautiful unfinished furniture warehouse. I want to buy everything.

OH AND AND AND Uncle Don told me yesterday that I can have the dog. He will most likely be coming home with me in July.

Win.

My players rock my world.

That's the summary of this game.

But if you want more details, sure! Without spoiling too much:

- Players going to their room for Excedrin were mistaken for their characters fleeing justice and assaulted in the hallway by nearly the entire game xD
- Happy endings
- Sad endings
- Powers used for good
- Powers used for awesome
- Handlers fighting with their E-phos
- E-phos fighting with themselves
- Gay mexican standoffs
- Impassioned speeches
- True love
- Fake love
- A lot of inconvenient switching
- Mad dashes to keep people in control
- Taking a minute to take the napkin away from the dog, who was having a shred-things party
- Collars and forehead stamps
- "You made me swear up and down to be fully clothed! I am. You weren't more specific than that!"
- Teenagers being teenagers
- Small rodents
- Me breaking at least half a dozen times and laughing so hard my ribs cramped

Feel free to add more. Please do. We'd love to hear about it. Feel free to be spoilery in the comments if need be.

I think what really made this game was the cast. All of my players were absolutely amazing and went so far for their characters that I was really turned on as a storyteller. There were a lot of tears shed by half a dozen characters, a lot of heartfelt silences, and a lot of character breakthroughs. People are e-mailing me telling me that they're still coming down from their character's headspace, which is awesome and a huge surprise. I didn't think that this game would have as much of an impact as it did.

Also, one thing I'm definitely going to explore in my next game is production and presentation. It was amazing how much of a difference the collars and forehead stickers made. It was a stark physical reminder that you weren't talking to a human, and a lot of people said that those two things really changed how they, as a player, saw the other characters, which is what I was hoping for. It's a huge tone-setter, and something I really want to tweak in the future. I think this is something very much up [livejournal.com profile] elenuial's alley, and this game was very heavy with collaboration. It proved that we could work together and have something come out well (as well as not kill one another), so next time, we might want to work on a more setting-immersive game.

100+ picture slideshow, as well as a few random samples from the first 50 or so, below the cut:

ExpandAgain with the grainy photos! My camera hates the Radisson. )

There were a few plots that didn't happen, and I've learned my lesson about relying on players to set certain things off, and those hitches have been fixed. And we added a lot of impromptu things, and we're rewriting certain characters to change their focus quite a bit more.

Other than that, we've had pretty positive feedback and players were still talking to me about it for days afterward. And swapping character sheets. =)

If we do run this again, it'll probably be in the fall, probably at Brandeis. And again, casting will be absolutely crucial. Probably wanting another runtime GM, too.

Also, since people really seemed to love the world and the concept, I'm toying with the idea of turning it into a campaign. Maybe. I've never written one of those bad boys before.

Any thoughts on re-running? As in, requests and whatnot? Thoughts on it as a campaign?

Also, I will soon be posting a poll for you guys to help me decide what game I'll be writing/running next year. There are a bunch of ideas bouncing around in my head, and I need to freaking pick one.

The theme for this Intercon, apparently, was Haz Wins. Seriously. Pretty awesome.

The pre-con stuff was pretty fun: a few panels, some socializing, that sort of thing, and it got me into the Intercon mindset. It also gave me a chance to hang out with people (and people to ask me questions about Leash) and try to relax a bit before Saturday night.

My game recap, as hidden below the cut.

ExpandRedemption, Limbo, and Securemarket: some spoilers below. )

Leash gets its own post, which is forthcoming.

Also, won two passes to Wyrd Con in the raffle! Fun. And passing on Dead Dog was possibly the best decision I've made in the last year. Dear LORD was I done.

Corsets!

hazliya: (Default)
So, after lusting after underbust corsets for like, ever, I got these:

This, in brown tartan. The photos really don't do them justice.

Bought them on the 24th, arrived today. Meaning made and shipped in a week.

They're super strong, super comfortable, and awesomely made. Best part? Together, they cost $70. Shipping was extra, but still.

So. Worth. It.

I'm absolutely in love with them.

I was actually really skeptical at first, because he's an Ebay seller, and usually the Ebay corsets are cheap Leg Avenue type things. But I'd heard about this guy from a costuming friend, and am completely floored by how awesome he is.

ExpandHere are more examples of his corsets. )

I'm thinking of buying from him again by mid-week so that things'll be here for Intercon. Anyone else interested? He'll cut shipping costs if they ship together.

EDIT: AND they come with corset-size garment bags. I'm already back to shopping.

5 years today.

<3 Love love beam.
hazliya: (comp)
So, with half of the character sheets finished, last night [livejournal.com profile] elenuial and I did the casting for Leash. Again, some of the casting we did just broke us, which was awesome.

I'd forgotten how time-consuming and flat-out grueling it is to send casting hints to 30 people. It seriously sucked, and my wrist was killing me.

On the plus side, a lot of players so far seem super excited about their characters, which keeps me energized to write everything out. I'm cranking out 3-4k word character sheets in two hours, not including the "goals" or "who you know" sections. Moral support is nice, and casting people early so you know that people are excited for you to finish is a good battery-charger.

To my players: keep it up!

Off to writing I go.
hazliya: (Default)
Long and short of it: My PCP is an hour away. I needed to get on a new birth control pill. I mixed up the appointment time, and therefore missed my appointment.

I need to start taking the pills on Sunday.

This was a problem.

I'd heard that Planned Parenthood could dole out prescriptions, and not only do they take my insurance, but also walk-ins from 9-3 on Fridays. And it's ten minutes from my house.

After getting through security, despite a full waiting room, I only had to wait for about twenty minutes before being seen. It was low-fuss, the nurses were very nice and very efficient, and it was basically a matter of:
"No health problems?"
"Nope. Just wanna be back on the pill."
"Here are some mandatory questions."
"I will answer them."
"You are not at risk. Yay!"
"Yay!"

So, less than two hours total (that's including getting through security and new patient intake procedure) and $15 later, I was handed a prescription for the pills I needed for a year.

I dropped it off at CVS, and can pick it up at my earliest convenience.

Sweet.

Leash filled half an hour after signups opened. Holy lederhosen, Batman!

I can count on one hand the names I don't recognize.

MY PLAYER LIST IS MADE OF AWESOME. There are so many people that I love seeing in character and I just think are fantastic players in general that signed up for my game. I love you all.

I can't wait to keep writing.

(If you still really want to play but missed it before it filled, email me.)
hazliya: (polka dot umbrella)
Totally forgot to post this.

I've been driving my dad's beat up old Taurus for 5+ years now. A few weeks ago, he called me out of the blue to tell me that he may have found me a car. I said great, my car still runs fine, but whatever. No big hurry.

Last week, he tells me to take Thursday off so we can go to the DMV and swap the titles.

...What?

So you did find a car. Thanks for letting me know.

What kind of car is it, Dad?

"A silver one!"

...Thank you. That was so helpful, I'm speechless.

So I headed down nice and early, and thanks to the lovely people at the DMV, we had titles/insurance/registration/plates swapped and done with in less than two hours. Whoa!

It turns out, I'm now the owner of a silver Pontiac G6 with red interior lighting. It's awesome. It makes me want to play Splashdown all the time.

The best part about the car? The price. It belonged to one of my dad's employees, who blew a cylinder in it and was going to scrap it, but gave it to my father on the condition that he haul it away himself. Papa agreed, as the car was otherwise in fantastic shape, and took it to my mechanic cousin. They found an engine with less than 40k miles on it, slapped on new tires, cleaned the damn thing, and fixed up the climate control. Car looks like new, runs like a dream, and total money paid to get it so?

Less than $1800.

I'm so happy with it. The only trouble is, I need to find an adapter for my iPod (no tape deck in this one), and the car is crazy fast. I can go 80 and not feel it. I just need to keep an eye on that, but otherwise, I couldn't be happier. And I need to find a way to repay my dad and cousin - probably grooming the latter's dog for a year and cooking something low-cal yet palatable for the former.

I love my car.

The run of Martha Stewart's Guide to Interdimensional Summoning (and Basting a Turkey) this Sunday was EPIC. There were a few hiccups, like a very late start and missing character sheets and someone stealing props a little early, but overall, it was an awesome run. Special thanks to [livejournal.com profile] elenuial and [livejournal.com profile] zapf for being... extra special AGMs. xD

Things of note in game were things like:
- a rickroll
- tentacles
- grandiose introductions
- strangely appropriate Twilight references
- highly caustic panties
- muppet face
- having sex in every room of Martha Stewart's house
- Grizz and Dot Com
- Harry Potter slashfic
- puppies arguing that they are marshmallows
- staying firmly in the closet
- barn animal noises

...and much, much more. A lot of the bonds formed were new pairings; only two were repeated from the last run. It was fantastic to see how differently the characters were played, and a lot of fun to watch them interact.

You can actually see for yourself. Pictures below the cut.

ExpandSome of my favorites, and a Picasa slideshow of 100+! )

I'm about to send everyone the source materials for the game, so they should get a kick out of that.

Thank you to everyone who played. I had a fantabulous time.

...my newest additions, home safe and sound and happily snoozing. =)

ExpandMore photos under the cut! )

No names as of yet, but they're docile and sweet and very nosy already. I can also start to see a little as far as personalities go - the orange baby is a lot braver and more mobile, while the white baby is more reserved. They're brothers, though, and two months old - so we've still got a ways to go. They're even cuter in person, and I fell in love right away. I also got to meet their mother, which was really neat, but neither of them look like her at all. =)

I'm so happy. I'll post about the expo later, but for now, I'm just enjoying having new babies in the house. <3
hazliya: (red umbrella)
So, two things are happening the next two Sundays:

Sun 10/4: I'm going to be hitting up King Richard's Faire. I haven't been in years. I'm so freaking excited! Although I don't think I have much for ren faire garb nowadays...
Let me know if you want to come with! I'd be happy to have more people. My family'll be there. You can meet my mom. Yea-uh.

Sun 10/11: The Scituate Art Festival! The place is amazing. We go every year, and it's a blast. I'm so excited for this one, it's almost on par with picking up my BABY SNAKES tomorrow!

So, yeah. If you want to come to either of these events, let me know, and we can arrange meeting up. =)

...makeover makeover, MAKEOVER.

I did a mini-makeover on my model today.

So, along my spree of hair risks in the last few months...

I now have bangs.

And not just any bangs!

Punk girl bangs. Full and tapered, like Bettie Page's.

I love them.

EDIT: Here's a picture I just grabbed. Please excuse the lack of makeup.

What do you guys think of them? Yes? No?

They're growing on me the more I look at them. =)
