I've been mauled!

Today I got my first animal-related injury.

I have a huge freaking gash scrape from being latched onto by a crazed evil robot hermit crab.

At least he didn't break the skin. Found out later that if he had, I'd have had to get a tetanus booster.

Who wants hermit crabs as pets, really? Usually "crabs" refers to something that people generally don't want.

I think the appeal of hermit crabs is that they are low maintenance and move about.

I use to love having hermit crabs as a kid, that is until it decided to crawl out of its shell get out of its cage and die somewhere in my room. The whole place smelled like bad seafood for a week.

I think I'd enjoy littering their tank with a variety of replacement shells and seeing which ones they chose. Maybe even make it a game where people buy stock in shells and receive dividends if they're chosen.

I like hermit crabs. I think they're adorable.

I've never had one pinch me, however. Mebbe you're just not a crab girl.

My grandparents have a beach house on the Cape, on the bay side. When the tide is low you can walk out for over a mile, and in the tidal flats are little tiny hermit crabs (http://pics.livejournal.com/bleemoo/pic/0000t7h5/) that are small enough that they are physically unable to break human skin, so you can just pick them up and let them crawl on your hand.

For the first 10 years of my life or so I thought that was the only kind of hermit crab, and I got very confused whenever anyone talked about getting pinched by a hermit crab.
