So, Racheal (yes, that's how it's spelled) headed up today and we went off to bond at Salvation Army's Half Off Day, where we chatted and laughed over horrendous clothes and picked up a color scheme (vaguely) while I rattled off ideas. I think, all in all, she spent $6 on clothes (tank top, vest, skirt) and I spend $5 at the dollar store getting wrapping paper, tinsel, and balloons. Total cost for shoot: $11

Back here, I grabbed a rather poorly-lit corner, set up remote bulbs, and created a little toybox/playroom by turning cheap birthday wrapping paper into decorative walls. Tinsel went everywhere, as did mirrors and balloons, and R grabbed accessories and makeup from her car. When all was said and done, it was a terrific shoot.

Also, I totally eased her snake-phobia. She said that she was petrified of snakes, but after Bowie let her pet him, she kept wanting to play with him.

And she gave me some of the best compliments I've ever received. When her friend backed out of the shoot today because of another photographer being a prick (apparently, her friend picks some skeezy, untalented creeps for them to shoot with), she took a look at some of the proofs and immediately said "Oh, man. She's going to be so jealous. I can't wait to show her."

She also said that she was so much more comfortable, had more fun, and had more favorite pictures in my shoot alone than any of the others she's ever done combined (and she's done quite a few). She wants to work with me again as often and as quickly as possible, saying that she's going to bring said friend along to see what "photographers should really be like" and that I was the standard she was going to hold everyone else to now.
"Seriously. You made me look better than I thought I could ever imagine I could look."

*glow*

Off to edit part 2.

Also, I need to pick a top three. I tried to edit them to have a few distinct feels - which do you guys like?

I like 2, 6, and 8 the best. Nice job! Though the eye makeup is just a -tiny- bit extreme, it works within the context of the photos.

Yeah, she wanted to ramp up her eyes, since they work well with the wig. And the teal works surprisingly well with the background. =)

Although I don't think I've ever seen so much pink and fuchsia in my life.

Hee! Indeed.

And yeah, it's like "Whoa, that's a lot of color."

I vote for 4 & 9

9 is also awesome, but for some reason I think she looks too tan in 4.

She actually is pretty freaking tan. I tried to work with that with bright colors, but it still shows in some shots.

Meep. I don't know, it just doesn't seem to work on her. I'd recommend a bit less time at the tanning booth. But other than that, she looks fabulous, and your lighting is very good in a lot of these to downplay the over-tanned-ness. Again, good work.

Thanks. I love 9, and for some reason think it'd make an awesome desktop background.

Hmm by Editorial standards the makeup is subdued. I think it works well in thoese shots and could go further but I like the more mid way between natural at play and high fashion concept

Yeah. The trouble with the makeup is that the hot pink was latex based, and too much would've been really uncomfortable. And I don't want my models uncomfortable. =/

yes, always something I need to remember when I start zoning behind the camera. So I always emphasize it when we start.

She said she was ridiculously comfy, though, because she got to play with tinsel and her mother never let her when she was a child xD

Also, I wasn't going for high fashion here - I was kinda going for fun and silly. I just wanted to do something on the ridiculous side. =D

I don't really have direction with these things. I just kind of... set something up and take photos. I'm a ridiculous amateur.

That doesn't make you an amateur. Some of the best quality work I've seen was done by amateurs or just at random, and honestly, you take better photographs than some pro photogs I've worked with.

I'd like you to shoot me sometime before I leave New England, actually, if you're game.

Wow. Thanks.

You might be significantly less impressed after seeing this (http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b108/hazliya/setup.jpg), which was our setup. I literally made everything from scratch, so it wasn't in a studio or anything special.

No, actually if anything I'm *more* impressed. You created an amazing illusion of a radically different space with very limited budget and available resources. You have phenomenal vision.

It's just a little creativity. My mother was dirt poor growing up, and she's one of the most creative people I know.

Plus, there are things you can do with photography. One, don't show the edge of the space xD Two, always have her pose contorted against the wall to give the impression of a small space. Three, shiny crap! =D

Seconded. I'm very impressed by that.

Also, either your friend has amazing skin, good makeup skills, or photoshop rulz.

She did all her makeup herself. I didn't have to touch up her skin at all (except to use Spot Heal on her nose stud, which she didn't want in the pictures).

I find myself considering asking you to take pictures of me some day. I don't even like being in pictures.
