And they're like... it's better than yours.
morethings5 mentioned forever ago that he'd be up for a shoot. I don't normally work with male models, and he's one of the cool kids, so I agreed that it needed to happen. I got my hands on some musk deer antlers, he mentioned a pretty bit of wilderness that he liked to tromp around in, and it kind of snowballed from there.
_dragonwolf_ was kind enough to let us use her place as a base of operations, and was an excellent source of opinions and, at times, bouts of hysterical laughter as we went through prep. We definitely all agreed that we were going for an artistic imagining of a deer spirit rather than furry-level enthusiasm and costume, and I know that he and I had talked about wanting to go for a more genderfluid, androgynous kind of feel, and I tried to factor that into the way I was shooting.
So after layers of makeup and shredding/pinning a linen sheet into a toga (of which
_dragonwolf_ had a breadth of experience, though I like to pretend she secretly wears them around when no one's looking, not that she had to do them for a play xD) we drove off into the magical woodlands of Waltham.
(also,
morethings5 discovered the impracticality of having horns when one has to walk through doorways or drive a car.)

I really like how these came out. I will also admit to a certain level of self-interest in this shoot, as I kind of wanted to prove to myself that I can work in not-bright-colors-all-the-time.
But he was a trooper, letting me strap antlers (albeit cleaned and stripped) to his head and climbing around barefoot in the leaf litter and up rocks and trees, though there was no shortage of snarky commentary. I like snarky models. =)
What do you guys think of the first subdued-toned shoot I've done in a while?
These are great
Date: 2011-06-13 04:20 am (UTC)4 is also powerful, but it reads to me as very masculine not genderfluid.
7 is a great concept, and I like the line of the extended leg/foot, but the back foot is so solidly grounded that it spoils the fantasy of the shot for me. I wish there was a plant or rock obscuring the view of his back foot.

Does 4 not read as fluid to you because it seems to uphold a match between my apparent physical gender and the gender I seem to be presenting through my pose? If that's the case, perhaps reconsider whether my apparent physical gender should carry any meaning in deciding whether my appearance is fluid. I would say that the fluidity of my gender can only be captured by the entire set of photographs - some masculine, some feminine, some neither, some both, and not in how well those categories align with my apparent physical gender or sex.

Otherwise, I like numbers 8 and 9. They have a playful nature about them that works well.

In regards to the toga stuff, well... *shifty eyes* My lips are sealed. But let's just say that if you ever needed help fashioning a super hero cape, hats from random stuff, or makeshift belly shirts, my skill set would line up...
