The odyssey of blonde
Jun. 1st, 2007 07:29 pmSo! Remember how I wanted to go back to my long-forgotten natural (although
dark_towhead has known me as a brunette so long he thinks blonde is unnatural on me xD) ashy blonde? Attempt #1 was a week ago today.
Last time I dyed my hair, I forgot how strong my natural red highlights are. And when I bleached it, the bleach didn't mix well and I had inadvertent highlights - the red! So instead of going back to the expected beach blonde, I was strawberry. It was a nice color, don't get me wrong, but when the sun hit it, this happened.
I was red.
Again, nothing against red, but it had to go. Trouble is, when you bleach hair that's naturally red? It doesn't come out a flattering copper. Or, despite the name, a vampire-fetish manic panic crimson.
No, the base color for red hair is orange. Not pumpkin. Orange. Keratin orange. If-a-flamingo-ate-only-carrots-since-birth-it-would-turn-this-color orange.
So bleaching is not enough to get the desired hair color. According to a stylist/colorist friend, as long as you deep condition often, you can bleach up to every 24 hours. But not risking it, I waited a week before trying again.
This time, I mixed, applied, and worked the hair bleaching myself. To my happy surprise, it came out very light and even. But the color?
GOLDENROD.
It's that shade of yellow orange that would result if a mango, uncooked chicken fat, and Vitamin C had a drunk threesome.
Not the color I'm going for.
Time to get color in a box. This I have experience with, having dyed my hair for years. What do you know! They have a color called "Ash blonde!" And it's on right now.
But I thought I'd share a few photos I took after blowing out my freshly-bleached hair.

With flash.

Without. It's actually quite a bit yellower.
The lighting was dim in the room, but the actual shade is almost visible where the flash hits my hair. But I was sure this was normal, after watching friends bleach and dye, and now I'm waiting the rest of the 20 minutes until I can shower and rinse out the newest phase of dye.
Pictures of the result forthcoming.
